Gold futures slip, silver falls below $90

April gold futures fell 0.29% to $5,211.1 an ounce

Gold and silver futures fell on Thursday as markets remained cautious ahead of the latest round of talks between the United States and Iran, due to take place later on Thursday in Geneva.

The United States imposed sanctions on more than 30 entities supporting Iranian oil and weapons sales, stepping up pressure on Tehran.

On US trade policy, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Donald Trump would sign a directive to raise global tariffs to 15% where appropriate, after new 10% duties took effect this week following a Supreme Court ruling that struck down reciprocal tariffs imposed last year.

April gold futures fell 0.29%, or $15.1, to $5,211.1 an ounce at 08:51 a.m. Mecca time, while spot gold rose 0.63%, or $33.1, to $5,197.88 an ounce.

May silver futures slid 2%, or $1.82, to $89.81 an ounce, while spot silver edged up 0.15% to $89.56.

Spot palladium was steady at $1,798.15 an ounce, while platinum rose 0.74% to $2,305.06.

The dollar index, which measures the US currency against a basket of six major peers, slipped 0.14% to 97.57.
