Gold futures fall, head for 2nd weekly loss

Gold futures for April delivery edges down 0.5% to $5,100.4 per ounce

Gold and silver prices fell on Friday, recording their second consecutive weekly loss as the US dollar continued to strengthen and concerns intensified over rising inflationary pressures driven by higher energy prices.

Gold April futures declined 1.25%, or $64.10, to $5,061.70 per ounce, deepening the metal’s weekly loss to 1.88%.

Meanwhile, silver May futures fell 4.44%, or $3.756, to $80.914 per ounce, bringing the white metal’s weekly decline to 3.46%.

This came as the US Dollar Index—which measures the value of the US currency against a basket of six major currencies—rose 0.61% to 100.35 points at 9:12 p.m. Makkah time, heading toward weekly gains of about 1.40%.

Commerzbank in a note said expectations of a more restrictive monetary policy are the main reason why the price of gold has come under pressure.

Data released on Friday showed that the core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index in the US—the preferred inflation gauge of the Federal Reserve—accelerated to 3.1% in January, in line with expectations, but still above the central bank’s 2% target.

Separately, the Bureau of Economic Analysis revised down the growth rate of the US economy in the fourth quarter of 2025, reviving concerns about a potential stagflationary downturn.

This comes as Donald Trump issued strong warnings toward Iran, stating that the US would hit Iran “very hard next week,” adding further uncertainty to the outlook of the ongoing conflict.
