US retail sales growth slowed in April

The pace of US retail sales growth slowed on a monthly basis in April, reflecting the pressures households are facing due to high energy prices, according to data released Thursday by the Census Bureau.

The data showed US retail sales grew 0.5% month-on-month in April, in line with expectations, while the March figure was revised down to 1.6%, compared to the previously estimated 1.7%.

Interpretation? The slowdown in US retail sales growth suggests that consumer spending is beginning to be affected by rising energy prices in the wake of the war in the Middle East, potentially reflecting a decline in momentum in the largest engine of the US economy.
