Saudi banks’ T-bond holdings slip SAR 3.9B in May

Saudi banks' T-bill holdings fell by SAR 3.9 billion month-on-month (MoM) to SAR 663 billion at the end of May, according to Saudi Central Bank (SAMA).

On an annual basis, holdings increased 6%, or about SAR 40.1 billion.

T-bills accounted for around 72% of banks' total claims on the government and quasi-government sector during the period.

Total claims rose to SAR 916.8 billion in May from SAR 846.5 billion a year earlier.

In Saudi Arabia, T-bills are long-term debt instruments issued by the government through the Ministry of Finance and the National Debt Management Center (NDMC).
T-bills include government domestically and internationally issued bonds/sukuk, which are purchased by banks in the secondary market.
