US current account deficit widens in Q2 2026


The US reported that its current account deficit widened by $33.4 billion, or 15.7%, during the second quarter of 2026, according to data released on Thursday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

 

The US current account deficit thus reached approximately 3.0% of US gross domestic product (GDP) in Q2 2026, up from 2.7% in the first quarter, as the goods trade deficit widened.

 

The US net international investment position stood at negative $22.42 trillion at the end of Q2 2026, while net financial account transactions totaled negative $369.7 billion, reflecting net borrowing by the US from foreign residents.
