Gold prices rise ahead of US jobs report

Gold bars

Gold and silver prices settled lower on Friday, posting a second consecutive weekly loss as a global selloff in sovereign bonds pushed borrowing costs to levels not seen in decades.

A weaker dollar and reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month following a softer-than-expected September jobs report limited losses in precious metals. However, bond yields turned higher, keeping gold and silver under pressure.

The rise in yields reflected bets that the Fed would raise interest rates at least once before year-end, potentially beginning a tightening cycle to contain inflationary pressures stemming from the U.S.-Iran war.
