Gold falls nearly 2%, settles below $4,300

Gold prices fell on Tuesday, with the most-active contract settling below $4,300 per ounce for the first time since Dec. 10, pressured by concerns over tighter US monetary policy.

Investors are awaiting US consumer inflation data due this week to assess the outlook for monetary policy, amid growing signs of resilience in the labor market and rising inflationary pressures stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.

The economic backdrop gives the Federal Reserve room to keep interest rates elevated for an extended period, while markets are pricing in a rate hike by December.
